Rejoice Canada! Rogers Communications Inc., in conjunction with the release of their first quarter results, made a brief, but important announcement that they have worked an agreement with Apple Inc. and will finally be bringing the iPhone to Canada.
"We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year," Rogers CEO Ted Roger said in a statement issued this morning. "We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned."
Given that Rogers would logically be offering the eagerly awaited 3G version of the iPhone, it’s not surprising that the announcement was vague, as more detail may tip Apple’s hand and disclose when the 3G model would hit the market. Current speculation has put the new iPhone’s release for summer 2008.
Does this mean that Rogers will be revamping its billing packages to finally include a reasonable, flat rate data plan? Let’s hope so, as current data plans would be far too expensive to truly enjoy the benefits of an iPhone.
Rogers (TSE: RCI.B) shares rose 3.64%, or $1.56 CDN, to close at $44.46 CDN.
